We take stuff places.
(Originally by our esteemed founder, Newman I. Cheveron. 2004 edits by Ziptie.)
We don't require you to "work" a certain number of hours -- you
can ride as much or as little as you want. If you've never ridden for
BRSD before, we'll send you out on a training ride for half an hour or
so with an experienced messenger so you learn the shtick, then you're
on your own.
What we *do* require is that when we tell someone we'll
deliver something, we follow through and actually deliver it. And we do
it relatively cheerfully. WE ARE NOT THE BRC POST OFFICE. We don't
abuse people, we aren't mean. People can count on us to provide an
actual useful service, we do our job well, and we have fun doing it.
Most of us elect to wear BRSD "uniforms" -- the T-shirts that
Ziptie will be ordering. The t-shirt is recognizably bright orange, has
the BRSD logo on it, and the year's slogan (2004: "Stellar Service to
Heavenly Bodies"). You aren't required to wear the uniform, but it
looks cool when all of us do. Think brand recognition.
We have custom-printed BRSD-logo blank postcards, and we give
them out to people so that they can write messages on them and send
them across the playa using our service. Delivering these postcards is
80-90% of our business. You will have an opportunity to order a supply
of postcards for yourself.
Many of us carry BRSD-logo "cancellation" stamps -- basically,
a self-inking rubber stamp that we stamp onto the postcards we deliver,
stamp into our manifests, stamp onto the sender/recipient of a
delivery, stamp all over the place. Kind of like cancelling a postage
stamp, only with our badass logo. All the returning messengers have one
of these. WE NEED A VOLUNTEER TO MANAGE TAKING ORDERS FOR NEW STAMPS
AND HAVING NEW STAMPS MADE. Contact me if you're interested; I can set
you up with artwork and a contact of the little mom-n-pop stamp shop
that has made our stamps for the last four years.
Other than that, everything is much more optional. I have a
messenger-style shoulder bag, a clipboard with some papers on it that I
make people sign in order to accept a delivery, and I carry an FRS
walkie-talkie for communicating with other messengers.
